Improving your website’s position on search engines, or Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) as it is known as is an easy way to improve business. Whether that is to gain more sales, to increase leads or to raise awareness of your campaign, being at the top of search engine results is key to your goal.
For many, this world of getting to the top of a search engine seems mysterious and intimidating, however, there are some things you can do yourself to improve your search ranking. Here are our top 5 tips for helping to improve your SEO ranking.
One of the easiest things is to take a look at current site performance by using tools such as GTMetrix and PageSpeed Insights. These will identify how good your website is right now and set your benchmark to measure improvements. It will also show you if there is anything that stands out that could be improved to help your SEO ranking.
We also recommend taking a look around your website, especially logging in to the backend of your website. Take time to see if there are any large files or images that could potentially be compressed (reducing the file size). You can try using an image optimisation plugin for this such as Shortpixel. Identifying quick wins like this can help in a big way!
Another aid you can install is Yoast, an SEO plugin that can help you in structuring your pages to assist you with your ranking for your chosen keywords. Yoast ranks each page with a traffic light system and gives you tips on each page on how to improve your SEO ranking for your keywords. It also alerts you to other elements such as adding ALT tags or creating links that will help your SEO ranking. It’s a free plugin which is well worth the download.
A simple addition you can make to your website is by installing security plugins to help reduce spam which can weight down on your site’s performance. Plugins that stop spam comments from being put onto blogs can help a lot, and automate an otherwise annoying process. One of our favourites is ‘Antispam Bee’. It is an easy win to help with your SEO ranking.
One thing we will mention, however, is to be careful with the number of plugins that you use on your website. WordPress often has many free plugins which are very tempting to use and implement, and some do have the ability to improve the performance of your site. Despite this though, we recommend trying not to get too carried away with installing plugins on your site, as having too many can have a negative impact, and can even break your site if used incorrectly.
We have only touched the tip of the iceberg with these 5 tips on SEO, but we wanted to share with you the quick wins that will help you the most. We hope that you find these tips on improving your SEO ranking useful and that you have some success.
